Abstract

This study aimed to analyze the impact of social media platforms on the credibility of traditional media by examining mechanisms of digital interaction, patterns of news consumption, the spread of misinformation, and their implications for public trust in traditional media institutions. The study is based on the assumption that digital transformation has not only created new channels for news circulation, but has also reshaped the concept of credibility itself. Consequently, the evaluation of news credibility is no longer solely associated with the media institution, but is increasingly influenced by the context of publication, audience interaction, algorithms, and the social sharing dynamics of content. The study adopted a mixed-methods approach that combines both quantitative and qualitative dimensions, given its ability to interpret the phenomenon from multiple perspectives. The quantitative aspect consisted of a questionnaire distributed to a sample of audiences who consume news through both social media platforms and traditional media. The qualitative aspect involved semi-structured interviews with journalists and specialists in media and digital communication. The study also relied on several theoretical frameworks, most notably the Uses and Gratifications Theory, Social Network Theory, and the Media Trust Approach, as interpretive frameworks for understanding the relationship between digital platforms and traditional media. Recent literature indicates that social media platforms have become a primary space for discovering and disseminating news, and that sharing news through these platforms is linked to both cognitive and social motivations. Moreover, trust in news has become increasingly associated with the social context through which information is received, rather than solely with the institution producing it. The study concludes that the impact of social media platforms on traditional media is twofold. On the one hand, these platforms have provided broad opportunities for reach and interaction; on the other hand, they have imposed significant pressures on standards of verification, accuracy, and balance. The study recommends the development of integrated professional and digital strategies that enhance editorial transparency, strengthen fact-checking systems, and rebuild trust between traditional media and audiences.
