Syntactic Semantics in Shams Al-Din Al-Kirmani’s Al-Kawakib Al-Darari (Commentary on Sahih al-Bukhari): An Analytical Study considering Modern Linguistics.

Abstract

تتناول هذه الدراسة الدلالة التركيبية عند شمس الدين الكرماني في كتابه الكواكب الدراري في شرح صحيح البخاري، وتبحث في طرائق توظيفه للبنية النحوية في توليد المعنى. وتهدف إلى إبراز التقاطع بين تحليلات الكرماني وبين بعض المباحث اللسانية الحديثة، ولا سيما في مجالات الحذف، والتكرار، والإسناد، والتعدية، والحصر، والاستثناء، والنكرة في سياق النفي والشرط. واعتمدت الدراسة المنهج الاستقرائي لرصد الشواهد، والمنهج التحليلي لتفسيرها في ضوء علم اللغة الحديث. وتبيّن النتائج أن الكرماني قدّم قراءة دقيقة للعلاقات التركيبية بوصفها أداةً دلاليةً مؤثرة في توجيه المعنى واستنباط الحكم، وأن شرحه يكشف عن وعي مبكر بوظائف السياق والبنية في بناء الدلالة. كما يظهر أن منهجه يمثل حلقة وصل بين التراث اللغوي العربي واللسانيات الحديثة.

This study examines syntactic semantics in Shams al-Din al-Kirmani’s Al-Kawakib al-Darari fi Sharh Sahih al-Bukhari, focusing on how syntactic structure contributes to meaning construction. It aims to show the relationship between al-Kirmani’s analyses and selected topics in modern linguistics, especially deletion, repetition, predication, transitivity, restriction, exception, and indefiniteness in conditional and negative contexts. The study adopts an inductive method to collect relevant examples and an analytical method to interpret them in light of modern linguistic theory. The findings indicate that al-Kirmani treated syntactic relations as a key semantic device in guiding meaning and legal inference, and that his commentary reveals an early awareness of the interplay between context and structure in meaning making. His approach also serves as a bridge between Arabic linguistic heritage and modern linguistics.
